The YVCC Food Club is a project of the Community Food Campaign of the Yellowstone Valley Citizens Council. YVCC is the greater Billings area affilliate of the Northern Plains Resource Council. YVCC's mission is "to educate, mobilize and testify to ensure citizens' voices are heard in the public decision-making process and to formulate grand visions of a healthy and sustainable community and work cooperatively to achieve them."
The YVCC Food Club organizes local food drops on a periodic basis for Billings area members and stands ready to support other food club startups around the state and region. Other Community Food Campaign projects include promotion of urban gardening and greater use of local foods in schools and other community institutions.
Montanans spend $3 billion each year on food. Over 90% of the food products sold in Montana now come from out of state or out of the country. For each one percent more that we eat of locally produced foods, we immediately add $30 million to the state's economy. The total economic benefit of each extra percent is more like $100-$120 million. That's because when you buy local, your purchase "multiplies" into many additional purchases that combine to create more local business and jobs and community prosperity. When you buy imported goods or services, most (75-80% or more) of that important "dollar multiplier" is lost out of the community. Every time we spend money, we are voting for the kind of local economy we will have. Our votes as consumers--especially organized consumers--are easily as powerful as any election ballot we will ever cast......So come and "vote with your fork" at the next YVCC food drop!
